Activity 6 Dating and Courtship    How do people in Plymouth marry? Courting or dating?

Essential Question:  Why do we act the way we do?

Unit Big question: Recognize the effects on adolescent and adults in their life stages

What is your focus in this unit, and why does it matter?

  • Adolescent and adult behaviors (values/norms) are influenced by culture.

  • Recognize the differences in behavior of adolescent and adults in their life stages

Ultimately (40 years from now)

  • As we learn about  life stages we develop more clearly defined roles, and how we fit into society.

Vocabulary-   dating, courtship, arranged marriage, choice marriage, homogamy

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IvIAYipKuJU 5:25           100 things to not say on a first date!!

Courtship is the period in a couple's relationship which precedes their engagement and marriage, or establishment of an agreed relationship of a more enduring kind. During courtship, a couple get to know each other and decide if there will be an engagement or other such agreement. A courtship may be an informal and private matter between two people or may be a public affair, or a formal arrangement with family approval. Traditionally, in the case of a formal engagement, it has been perceived that it is the role of a male to actively "court" or "woo" a female, thus encouraging her to understand him and her receptiveness to a proposal of marriage.

Dating is a part of human mating process whereby two people meet socially for companionship, beyond the level of friendship, or with the aim of each assessing the other's suitability as a partner in an intimate relationship or marriage. It can be a form of courtship consisting of social activities done by the couple. While the term has several meanings, it usually refers to the act of meeting and engaging in some mutually agreed upon social activity in public, together, as a couple.

Guiding question:  Do some people in small town America, Plymouth for example, still court as well as date?

Directions

1. Define the following terms:   dating, courtship, arranged marriage, choice marriage,  homogamy.     Use multiple sources on your own to define.  Page 127-134 in text

2. Read the links below on different information on dating and courting. Form an opinion on why we date or court socially. Use the "then and now" PDF file below to compare how it was in past to how it is now.

3. Answer the following question:  After completing the then and now sheet.

What function does dating fulfill for adolescents that is different than adults?

4. Answer this question. After completing the then and now sheet.

What contributed to the rise of dating over courting?

5. Look at another cultures pattern for marriage patterns and whether or not it is courting or dating on the way to marriage and why.

6. Answer at end:  Do you understand the role in our society or in another society of why we date or court?

7. Answer at end:  Can you predict the issues that can arise as a result of dating and not courting?

8. List websites, articles, movies, stories, songs, and issues in both the then and now sides on dating and courtship.

9. Count off from  1-4 and get in group to discuss the adolescent need to date or court.

Definition of a Norm: A shared standard of behavior of what a human being should or should not think, say, or do under given circumstances. These rules are both written and unwritten which provide order and predictability on which social patterns are based. These rules are historically, situationally, and culturally specific at any time.
